Sear Byzantine 798. The hexagram is sometimes called a double miliarense.
Heraclius was the a great emperor at a time when the Byzantine empire needed one. Hounded by enemies on many flanks, Heraclius began a counter-offensive in 622 A.D. and after 6 years of fighting, the empire's fortune were great once again. Heraclius is noted as being the restorer of the True Cross to Jerusalem. Cross atop I, year 14, tHEUP in exergue.

The obverse of this coin has a stunning strike whereby even the stylized facial details are visible!! The reverse green has been inactive for the past 8 years but watch carefully.

The Empire of Trebizond splintered off from the main Byzantine state in Constantinople. It actually survived 8 years after the fall of Constantinople.

20mm, very thin silver. I have always seen these coins as the successors to Byzantine silver miliaresons. The iconography is intricate and interesting. There actually is a reference book devoted strictly to Venetian grossos and I have been on a multi-year (going on 5) for this book. I believe I have located some and so if you have a collecting interest, please contact me for further details.

Andrea Dandolo Italy, Venice, 1343-1354 A.D., AR grosso.
Obverse: Christ seated on throne, facing,
Reverse: doge & St. Mark standing, facing, holding a standard.
The Venetian grosso was the de facto silver coin standard of the time. City / states / countries attempted to imitate the coin (Bulgaria, Serbia, other Italian city states). Venice was a power mercantile city state with military power, the doge being the head of state. The Venetians funded part of the crusades.

Antonio Vernier Italy, Venice, 1382-1400 A.D., AR grosso.
Obverse: Christ seated on throne, facing, J COURIA TIBI is part of legend visible
Reverse: doge kneeling facing St. Mark. Biaggi 2855.
This particular grosso significantly differs in design from previous ones with a kneeling doge versus the standing doge. Great symbolism, a wonderful and scarce medieval silver coin.

Reverse: doge kneeling facing St. Mark. My above attribution is certain that this is of Antonio Vernier (name visible on coin) the other features, less so. The flip this coin came in denoted it was a "Type 3." I don't know what that means but I do know that the coin differs quite significantly from the other Venetian grossos I have in my collection. 1.9 grams Price: $75
