RIC 421 Price: $45

Livia, wife of Augustus. 27 B.C. - 14 A.D., AE Dupondius. Sear 547, 300 pounds in VF. Some people like red patina, to me, UGH. Still, a rather rare type.
Price: $160.

Agrippa died 12 A.D., AE As.
Obverse: head of Agrippa left wearing rostral crown. M AGRIPPA L F COS III
Reverse: S C either side of Neptune standing left holding dolphin and trident.

Obverse: Laureate head right
Reverse: large SC inside a laurel wreath.
Sear Greek Imperial 291. The "sand" patina found on coins originating in Syria is always pleasing to the eye. The lighter orange/beige in the recesses dramatically highlights the darker high points of the coin. Very strong portrait of Tiberius.

Tiberius 14 B.C. - 37 A.D.
AE 23mm, Antioch.
Obverse: bare head right,
Reverse: SC in wreath. Really nice patina with a lot of eye appeal.

Obverse: C CAESAR DIVI AVG PRON AVG SC Cap of liberty
Reverse: COS TERT PON M TR P III P P around RCC.
Sear 617. Great coin for a quadrans. Evenly struck, centered, lots of detail. There is some microporosity and I have been watching this coin carefully for bronze disease as there are a few areas that look suspicious. Definitely a scarcer type.

Price: $85

Caligula 37-41 A.D., AE As.
Obverse: C CAESAR AVG GERMANICVS PON M TR POT Laureate head right.
Reverse: VESTA S.C. Vesta seated left.
The light sand patina on this coin does a superb job of highlighting the strong state of preservation. The only flaw I want to point out for "full disclosure" is that if you look at 7 o'clock on the obverse, corresponding to 11 o'clock on the reverse, the planchet seem to have a minor "delamination" of the surface there. Contact me if that isn't clear. Even with this, it is a wonderful coin!!

Price: $300

Claudius 41-54 A.D., AE Sestertius. Sear 633, 350 pounds in VF. Large decent example. Deep brown toning, surfaces not smooth. Reverse shows EX S.C. / OB / CIVES / SERVATOS in an oak-wreath. Definitely a scarcer type.

Nero 54-68 A.D., AR denarius. Obverse: A pudgy and bloated Nero laureate right. Reverse: Salus seated left. SALVS her. Sear 675, RIC 60 - rare. Personally I thought the slightly mishapen planchet was an ironic touch with the mishapen Nero.

Caracalla 198-217 A.D., Roman Provincial, large bronze, 15.6 grams, 30mm. In an amazing show of skill, Rob Golan indicated in a 15 second attribution that the coin is from Serdica. I have not been able to attribute this further in Greek Imperial Coins, nor do I have the more extensive Greek Imperial reference books. Good luck on attributing this. Price: $22 SOLD

Caracalla 198-217 A.D., Roman Provincial, large bronze, 11.3 grams, 25mm.
Moesia Inferior, Nikopolis. Obverse: Lauread head right

The flip from a respected ancients dealer indicates that the coin is not in BMC, Copenhagen, etc. I do not any Roman Provincial reference beyond "GIC" so I cannot verify. Coin is better than scan and extremely interesting Price: $225.

Geta 198-212 A.D., Roman Provincial, large bronze, 16.0 grams, 32mm. If I have decoded some of the Greek lettering on the obverse correctly, this is a coin from Geta. The strike on parts of the coin is tremendous and weakens towards the other side. Rather nice glossy black patina. Notice how there is no more attribution (grin). Again I am unable to further identify the coin. Price: $25 SOLD.

Macrinus 217-218 A.D., AE27.

Syria, Laodica ad Mare.
Obverse: Macrinus bare head right.
Reverse: Wolf and twins.
I bought this coin from Guy Clark some time back and we discussed the white spots on it. He believes that the original coin had lead inside of it and that these white spots are where it leached out. Guy Clark has a tremendous background in numismatics so I tend to believe him.
